About Valerie Masters
Artist Biography
b. 24 April 1940, London, England. This red-headed pop singer from London’s East End sang during her childhood in the local underground station during air raids and later became the private secretary to the Mayor of Stepney. She received her big musical break when she replaced Marion Ryan in the popular Ray Ellington Quartet. Masters made her first recording, ‘Ding Dong’, for Fontana Records in 1958 and was first seen on television on the Hughie Green Show. She was given her own series on Radio Luxembourg in 1959, which ran for over two years. Her only chart success came in 1960 with her sixth single on Fontana, a version of the European song ‘Banjo Boy’. This was the same song that gave much-loved singer/comedian George Formby his last chart hit. Masters represented Britain in the European (not Eurovision) Song Contest in Belgium in 1960, and this led to her working in Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands. She recorded for HMV Records in 1963, Columbia Records in 1964, Polydor Records in 1966 and once more on Columbia in 1969 but has not graced the chart since.
