About Wayne County & The Backstreet Boys
Artist Biography
Wayne Country (born Wayne Rogers) was associated with the scene surrounding Andy Warhol in New York City in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, working as a cross-dressing actress on projects with Jackie Curtis, Patti Smith, and Warhol himself. Country took his campy, bawdy aesthetic into the musical arena in 1972, forming the pioneering glam band Queen Elizabeth and performing in drag. (The band, which never released any records, was signed to David Bowie’s management company, and was rumored to have had a huge influence on Bowie). In 1975 Country formed the Backstreet Boys, who became regulars at CBGBs and Max’s Kansas City. Country & the Backstreet Boys recorded tracks for the compilation MAX’S KANSAS CITY: NEW YORK NEW WAVE, including a paean to the famous venue itself. In 1977 Country left the U.S., moved to England and later Berlin, and returned to the States as Jayne Country. She continues to act and play music as a transgendered performer.
