About Zak Tovin
Artist Biography
In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Seeing and hearing Shania Twain's "I Feel Like a Woman!" music video on Much Music back in 98' or so changed my life. Dancing in the living room in nothing but a diaper, singing along in baby noises, I knew that this is what I was meant to do.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP Frank Ocean, Blonde Modest Mouse, The Lonesome Crowded West These are albums that have guided me throughout my life. In my earliest years as a music fan, Em was the first rapper I ever obsessed over. As a teen, Frank Ocean spoke to my soft heart and sensitive nature. Nowadays, TLCW soundtracks my long drives.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Mess.” This was the first song I ever made a video for, and the first song I ever released that helped people take me "seriously" as an artist. I wrote it in my minivan parked on the side of a residential road in a particularly depressed state. I love it.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? The gongshow that was my first ever show. I got added to this lineup after "Gotta Eat" dropped, right? Half the venue was empty, sound was messed, headliner no-showed.. By the time I was on, there was like 20 people left. Still killed the set though!
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? There is too much on the bucket list left. The next thing I'll check off is making a track that is entirely written, rapped, mixed, mastered and produced by me alone. I respect the hell out of artists like JPEGMAFIA and Tyler, the Creator for that.
