Beat Happening formed in the university town of Olympia in the state of Washington, took inspiration from the DIY drive of punk and mixed in their own brand of tender, lo-fi geekiness. Led by K Records co-owner Calvin Johnson, the band's minimalist garage pop was often dark and sardonic, with even their sweetest love songs containing a slightly seamy edge. The trio split up following 1992's You Turn Me On, and each went on to projects like The Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic Sound System and D+.
