Norway’s Shining are the kind of band that will try just about anything and sound great doing it. Anchored by howler, saxophonist and quirky visionary Jørgen Munkeby since 1999, the project initially plunged into jazz and experimental rock. Then came their self-described “blackjazz” phase, a mash-up of black metal, industrial and skronk that turns albums like 2013’s One One One into boiling sound baths. In the late 2010s, Munkbey once again turned Shining inside out and upside down. The results, beginning with 2018’s Animal, are earworm blasts of party metal and dance rock all delivered with Munkeby’s trademark outrageousness.
