Around since the early '70s and ubiquitous during Cologne's boisterous carnival season, this party-starting sextet employ a world of rhythms to get revelers dancing and beer steins clanking: accordion-and-organ-boosted oompah, of course, but also Irish jigs, rockabilly, Mano Negra-like ska and even Middle Eastern quavering. Delivered in the local Kölsch dialect, their lyrics often celebrate food items that vendors hope to sell: pizza, burgers, applesauce, blood sausage. Even their name translates as “the chickens”—once upon a time, their stage costumes matched that name.
