After trying to make it as a singer/songwriter, Saskatchewan native Mark Korven switched his focus to film-score composition in the late ‘80s, earning a reputation for discordant, dystopian soundscapes through Canadian art-house thrillers like Cube. But it was the haunting string arrangements and terrifying atmospheres of 2015 cult favourite The Witch that established him as one of cinema’s foremost goosebump-inducers. He’s continued to unsettle audiences with the doomy orchestrations of The Lighthouse, not to mention the stabbing Herrmann-esque strings and found-sound madness he brings to the horror series Them.
