Leading this week’s playlist is Foster the People’s “Lost in Space”, the band’s first new release in three years and the lead single from their upcoming album Paradise State of Mind, due out in August. “It started as a case study of the late-’70s crossover between disco, funk, gospel, jazz and all those sounds,” lead singer Mark Foster tells Apple Music. “It was such a beautiful moment in time when these different styles of music were cross-referencing each other—artists like Nile Rodgers and Chic, the Tom Tom Club and Giorgio Moroder. I wanted to dive into that and figure out what they were doing.” Foster was also thinking about the social parallels between that era and today, from the recession to the political turmoil post-Vietnam, and other cultural tensions. “But then you see these expressions of joy happening through music,” he says, “and you start to think about joy as an act of defiance.” Check back often, as our editors update this playlist regularly—and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
