Seattle's Minus the Bear formed in 2001, and their brand of indie rock belies the members' beginnings in metalcore and post-hardcore. That's not to say their material is simpler. Throughout five albums and four EPs, the band have retained heavy metal's guitar gusto and math rock's sophisticated time signatures. Working from the underground to the mainstream and guided by producers who've worked with alt-rock behemoths My Morning Jacket and The Shins, they even introduced a synth sheen on 2010's Omni, further cementing their own distinctive place in the genre.
