For exactly a decade, the band Marc Seberg explored all the shady corners of the burgeoning New Wave and post-punk scenes. Led by Algerian-born Philippe Pascal, their 1983 debut, Marc Seberg 83, immediately created a recognisable aesthetic: clanging, near-industrial guitars and buzzing bass intoning on slow, shadowy songs. Pascal's vocals recalled Joy Division's Ian Curtis—all eerie, melancholic melodies sung with a low, haunting tone—but the band's later work lightened things up to embrace chiming pianos and some of pop's shine—even almost danceable songs—before they called it quits in 1991.
