Tenor saxophonist John Haley “Zoot” Sims is admired for sustaining the swinging comforts of pre-bebop jazz. "Zootcase", from 1952, displays incessant melodic invention and rhythmic poise. And while "Brandy and Beer" typifies his long-standing, balanced relationship with fellow tenor giant Al Cohn, their "Improvisation for Unaccompanied Saxophones" finds them bubbling along together minus a rhythm section. Sims never changed his sound significantly, and you can hear him tap into his inner Lester Young once again on 1978's "Body and Soul".
