Beginning in the early ’90s, Chicago native Paul Johnson made his mark on a crowded scene with crisp, kicking house rhythms that just seemed to hit a little harder than the competition’s. His playful approach to the groove is on full display in 1999’s irresistibly wriggly “Get Get Down” and his mischievous streak shines through in 1994’s bonkers, video-game-sampling “Psycho Kong”. Johnson’s infectious sample flips are second to none: The hypnotic chants of “Let Me See You Butterfly”, from 1994, are a crucial antecedent for the chopped and looped refrains of Chicago’s juke and footwork movements.
