John Grant wants us to know that he's the greatest we're ever going to meet, as he sings on the Sinéad O'Connor-featuring track "GMF”. That line alone, delivered in a dryly sarcastic tone, perfectly encapsulates one of the Michigan-born singer/songwriter's main motives as a lyricist: to shock, albeit with some serious self-deprecation. Previously in Denver dream-pop band The Czars, Grant released his debut solo album in 2010. Whether working with electronic instruments or the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, his songwriting retains its visceral, emotional charge.
