Formed in 1995 under the leadership of Vladimir Dotel, Ilegales fuses traditional merengue with hip-hop, house music and reggae. The Dominican Republic group's songs are perennially popular, though it doesn't hurt that they're heart-throbs who don't mind bearing their chests during their hyperactive choreographed routines. The band has thrived through changing trends and lineups, but Dotel keeps them relevant. Every new Ilegales song is a promise of beachside fun, bright colour and skittering melodies so snappy that you can't keep them from dancing through your head.
