A true MVP of the New York club scene, Kush Jones is as versatile as he is talented. The Bronx native can do it all: rolling juke and footwork, lush techno, rugged jungle, and radiant house. He started making beats in high school, and in the late 2000s, he discovered footwork and club music via dance battles in NYC; he joined L.A.’s Juke Bounce Werk crew in 2015, and around the same time, he began turning out tracks built around clever, kinetic sample flips. (Some of the inspiration for his style came from inheriting his grandmother’s collection of classic funk, disco and soul vinyl.) As a producer, Jones is wildly prolific and staunchly independent: Aside from a few records for friends’ labels like Future Times and HAUS of ALTR, the majority of his work has been self-released—for instance, his ongoing Strictly 4 My CDJZ series, a clearinghouse for his no-nonsense, never-fail club bangers.
