Nelson Riddle is celebrated for brilliant arrangements he crafted on classic recordings between the ‘50s and ‘60s by singers like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, but he pursued a different world of sound on his own. He scored numerous TV shows and films, melding crime-show darkness and orchestral splendour for The Untouchables and memorably injecting tension into an air of naïf innocence for Lolita, layering child-like mewling over flutes and twangy guitars. His brightly coloured “You Make Me Feel So Young” is but one example of how his arrangements expressed the optimism of the ‘50s in full Technicolor opulence.
