Orlando di Lasso Essentials
Playlist - 30 Songs
One of the most prolific composers of the late Renaissance, Orlando di Lasso was born in Mons, Belgium, and was taken to Italy for his musical education at the age of 12. His reputation as a child prodigy led to rumours that he had been abducted on three occasions by churches and noblemen interested in his music. Although there is no proof of this story, it does show the high esteem in which his abilities were held. At 24, he settled in Munich and worked for the rest of his life in the service of the Duke of Bavaria, despite receiving many lucrative offers of employment elsewhere. Lasso produced an enormous output of both sacred and secular music. Besides masses and motets, he wrote French chansons, German lieder and Italian madrigals, all carrying a distinct and authentic charm that endures to this day. Although he composed only vocal music, a number of songs have been arranged as instrumental versions, some of which appear on this playlist.
