Fronted by classically trained belter Kobra Paige, Calgary quintet Kobra and the Lotus have been bridging the worlds of vintage hard rock and contemporary metal since forming in 2009. Even as the band unleash a maelstrom of pummelling riffs and blast beats, Paige’s soaring, melodic vocals are the focal point, infusing gritty grinds like “Triggerpulse” with a gothic melodrama redolent of Evanescence. And there’s something undeniably classic about their sound, too: “Let Me Love You” channels the glory days of Heart for a post-thrash world, while a crunchy cover of Alannah Myles’ 1989 hit “Black Velvet” is steeped in bluesy swagger.
