Jonathan Meiburg and Will Scheff founded Shearwater as a place for quieter songs than they played in Okkervil River. But in the years since 2005, when the side project became Meiburg's full-time concern, Shearwater's scope has expanded greatly. Though the delicately layered folk-pop of early standouts like “Safeway” has always been one of Meiburg's strong suits, tougher and terser sounds come to the fore on the wiry, fuzzy guitar rock of “White Waves” and the electro-pop of “Quiet Americans”. An anxious cover of Folk Implosion's “Natural One” gives Meiburg another chance to harsh that mellow.
