Korean duo Peppertones serve up both easy-breezy house music and indie pop featuring piano lines and sweet vocals. Starting out in the early ‘00s, the pair took a cue from Shibuya-kei music by mishmashing all sorts of older styles together into new forms, stitched up by synthesiser melodies. They merge country twang with a retro pop skip on the distinctive “CAMPUS COUPLE,” while “Bikini” layers robot-like vocals over bouncing keyboard beats. Whatever genres they plumb for ideas, Peppertones reliably create some of the most upbeat and optimistic pop in South Korea.
