A garota não’s Cátia Oliveira grew up on a diet of flamenco, electronics and African beats blasting in her working-class corner of Setúbal, alongside the folk and protest songs of Portuguese greats such as José Afonso heard at home. Later dabbling in jazz and bossa nova, Oliveira found her niche in the soothing, poetic alt-folk of her acclaimed 2019 debut Rua das Marimbas. It was followed by an ode to the global spirit of her childhood neighbourhood, 2022’s 2 de Abril—a landmark date for Portuguese democracy—which reveals the multi-instrumentalist as a vital, socially conscious voice of her generation.
