The evolution of k.d. lang from country to pop blended the flavours of a heap of artists from both genres. While her raw-edged, bass-led vocals are indebted to country greats Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, her knack for perfectly formed, playfully poignant pop owes much to the fizz and sass of Culture Club's “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”, the bruised attitude of Elvis Costello's “Alison” and the melodic clout of The Carpenters' “Superstar”.
