Armed with the chops to blast heavy hardcore and melodic punk, Good Riddance are one of the U.S.’s most compelling political protest groups. The band were formed in 1986, in Santa Cruz, California, and baptised in skate punk and resistance to Reagan-era politics. Their full-length debut, For God and Country, didn’t arrive until 1995, but singer Russ Rankin’s confrontational lyrics and venomous delivery on songs like the anti-war “Mother Superior” quickly established the band as a force in political punk alongside kindred spirits like Propagandhi. In 1996, A Comprehensive Guide to Moderne Rebellion raised the lyrical stakes. The band took an extended break starting in 2007, but an often volatile political climate pulled Rankin back in. Good Riddance reunited in 2012 and released two formidable records in the 2010s, continuing a noteworthy four-decade run of musical dissent.
