Cyril Mokaiesh was a teenage tennis prodigy and, fittingly, the music he's created since the late '00s has volleyed between classic chanson style and edgy, experimental modern rock. As frontman for his eponymous band, Mokaiesh, he played the romantic raconteur atop the intense indie folk gallop of “La demande” and the post-punky bass pulse of “Change”. Since going solo under his full name in 2011, his palette has gradually expanded—on 2017's epic “Clôture”, spoken-word verses form the foundation for a mountainous surge of jagged electronics, staccato guitar jabs and queasy orchestration.
