Although she emerged in the mid-'00s, Philadelphia-based Melody Gardot is noted for music that updates wistful, brooding late-'50s jazz. With a string-heavy arrangement harking back to that era, the delicate "Baby I'm a Fool" measures the distance between tentative lovers. She goes darker and deeper in the nostalgic "Once I Was Loved" and takes a tango turn in the accordion-accompanied "Impossible Love". Gardot's international tour continues in the blithe bossa nova rhythms of "If the Stars Were Mine", and she channels Edith Piaf with a moody take on the chanson standard "La Vie en rose".
