Prior to becoming a solo artist, Dr G Yunupingu was a member of two iconic Aboriginal musical outfits, the groundbreaking Yothu Yindi and the celebrated Saltwater Band. A folk singer by definition—he accompanies himself on an acoustic guitar strung for right-handers, although he plays it left-handed—Dr G Yunupingu primarily sings in his native tribal language of Yolngu. His voice lies somewhere between a perfect-pitched altar-boy soprano and the sound of a breeze blowing over ancient desert sand.
