Magnus Öström first snagged jazz lovers' ears in 1993 as the drummer for Swedish giants the Esbjörn Svensson Trio; since striking out on his own, he has emerged as the most eclectic modern jazz bandleader this side of Pat Metheny. Beginning from a post-bop base, Öström has utilised everything from Brazilian rhythms to wailing rock guitar, and his drumming is just as unpredictable, shifting from tight syncopation to impressionistic flourishes. His work embraces one of jazz's most important rules: There are no rules.
