Longing lyrics and mournful music lie at the core of Portuguese fado, and few singers have evoked those feelings better than Carlos do Carmo. The son of celebrated fado singer Lucília do Carmo, he began recording in his own right in 1963, and by the ‘70s his unique vocal timbre and passionate delivery had won him a legion of fans across the world. Later in his career he introduced Frank Sinatra-style jazz, Brazilian bossa nova and French pop balladry to his songs, injecting the genre with fresh zip and zest—but still keeping it a very traditional affair.
