Ella, a.k.a. Norzila Aminuddin, has reigned over Malaysian rock since the '80s. After a stint fronting Ella & The Boys she went her own way with solo debut Pengemis Cinta, the first of several platinum-sellers that established her at the apex of the genre. Oscillating between moving fragility and fearless physicality, her versatile voice can be enticing and melodic or utterly visceral. As well as starring on hard rock picks and ballads with dynamic guitar solos, she also delivers on charming piano, synth and folk-rock melodies—as well as with earthy R&B and hip-hop beats.
