Pianist Tommy Flanagan's playing, impossibly pensive and impressionistic, peppered countless bebop and hard-bop landmarks. Under the influence of Nat King Cole and Art Tatum, Flanagan's solos refused to be tied down by metre (“Sunset and the Mockingbird”), and his deeply elegant harmonies are rich and evocative (“Over the Rainbow”). Of course, Flanagan had a buoyant side, as seen in the light-hearted motifs of “Just in Time” and the labyrinthine “Misterioso”. His most still moments—those when he is completely alone—are often his most beautiful (“Come Sunday”, “Thelonica”).
