Russian folk rockers Affinazh define their sound as “noir-chanson”. In practice, it’s more of an attitude than a genre—reflecting the quartet’s appreciation for the heartbreak in their lives amid the bright melodies and raucous singalongs that comprise their catalogue. Both tones are expressed in Mikhail “Em” Kalinin’s dramatic lead vocals and Sasha Om’s instrumentation. Bassist Sergeich lends a solid, funky edge and Aleksandr Koryukovets’ accordion-like bayan brings lightness—and sometimes a hint of yearning—to the anguished proceedings.
