Regula is the defining voice of Portugal's Nova-Escola movement in rap. With a gruff voice and a penchant for picking boom bap beats that recall American hip-hop's golden age, he'll appeal even to those who don't speak a lick of Portuguese. “Flavours” rides a drum pattern that could pass for an old-school Pete Rock production. And he's deft enough as an MC that the dense verses on “Casanova” nevertheless remain lithe. Despite its title, the flute-looped “Casca Grossa” finds Regula at his most nimble.
