Recognised as one of England's most soulful voices, Dusty Springfield also had an uncompromising personality that made her a feminist icon. Born Mary O'Brien, she took her stage name when she joined the early-'60s folk group The Springfields. Dusty's first solo success came with a run of blue-eyed-soul hits during the middle of the decade, and she recorded her most acclaimed album, Dusty in Memphis in 1969. She'd record through the next three decades, with another career revival when she teamed with The Pet Shop Boys on 1990's Reputation. Springfield died of cancer at age 59 in 1999.
