Composer and guitarist Julio César Bovea Fandiño—better known as Julio Bovea—invited lovers of Latin music to dance to his vibrant Colombian folk rhythms for almost sixty years. The Vallenato master began performing in Argentina in the '50s, leading a band of intricately picked guitars, galloping cowbell rhythms and tight, three-man harmonies tinged with bittersweet tones. Such a rich, vibrant sound still resonates—his work is even featured on the popular TV series Narcos. Bovea passed away in 2009, but the seminal musician will always be remembered through the genre he helped shape.
