Big drums, bright guitars and bold attitude: Those are the fundamentals of Phantogram's sound, topped off by Sarah Barthel's coolly expressive voice. A singer in Siouxsie Sioux's mould, she can belt it out with the best of 'em, but she's just as likely to drop to a whisper to make you lean in close. She and bandmate Josh Carter started out fusing hip-hop rhythms with dance synths, and over the years their music has become sleek and luxurious but never too polished—a little bit dangerous even, channelling the vibe of big cities after dark. There's a good reason they call it "street beat".
