An alum of The Polyphonic Spree, Annie Clark morphed into the formidable St. Vincent in the mid-'00s when she began composing complex baroque-pop arrangements lit by sparkling strings and all the ethereal charm of a dark fantasy ("The Strangers"). She's since steered her expressive croons through ever wilder territories, as in the electro-jazz funk of "Digital Witness" and the brassy soul of "Who", in which David Byrne finds his match.
