From his rise during the roaring '20s to his death in 1972, Maurice Chevalier reigned as France's premier song-and-dance man on radio airwaves and movie screens alike, leaving us with a deep repertoire of wildly amorous cabaret classics. While the jauntily baroque 1925 single “Valentine” made him a household name in Europe, a move to Hollywood in 1928 (spurred by the rise of “talkie” pictures) made Chevalier a Stateside star for decades to come, yielding such showtune standards as “Girls, Girls, Girls!” (from 1934's The Merry Widow) and the Gigi curtain-closer “Thank Heaven for Little Girls”.
