As the Chicago vocal group proved, classic soul in the ‘70s did originate from places other than Detroit, Memphis or Philadelphia. They began as The Hi-Lites in the late ‘50s before paying tribute to their hometown with a name change to The Chi-Lites. Mainstream success would escape them until the early ‘70s, when a string of singles, all anchored by The Chi-Lites' soaring, doo-wop-styled vocals, hit the upper regions of the charts. Their success was short-lived, though various iterations of the band would remain popular touring attractions into the 21st century.
