Elegy

I had to stop calling home, it's the loneliest phone line A dial tone echoed like the drone of a flatline There's no happily ever after to cosign The last gasp of the love we had has now capsized So lemme tell you where the mark of this lash lies From the second we decided to slash ties An open gash carved upon the path of our past lives I ran the math - far too many moments had passed by I should've known that without hope we would nose-dive Too many red flags hanging out on those clotheslines But through the rose-colored glass, I was so blind My own eyes closed to my erosion of sunshine We're once bitten, twice shy of a punchline A hound that's outfoxed by an eminent vulpine I guess we're minus a plus sign A silhouette of smoke billowed out of a blown mind So if this is the coda we codify A record spinning out with us alone on our own sides I'm going down with every melody memorized Remembering the end as our own elegy notarized And I suppose how the rhythm juxtaposes The prose to the heart of the beat when time's frozen It's slowest in the heat of those vibes and known moments When thoughts cascade to emotions Where do you go when your home has eroded? In this cracked case the facts place our love as the motive But now we backspace - the entwined and interwoven Since we dove in the headlong rush, two fools hoping We're stayin' open and growing to brighter omens Although every light aglow throws shadows we haven't chosen And I suppose now we know what we've awoken But we Don't Speak - leaving No Doubt to what's unspoken That's how it goes, the flow of the samsara It's cyclical, from biblical births to sayonaras We've bared shared scars like crowns and tiaras In the end it's all love - no trauma could ever mar us And you can never account for every factor The premise of the test, every lesson comes after And now the messaging is "let it go" faster Close the book on every photographic Polaroid captured So here's a toast to the closure of the chapter The chalice overflowing that I'll raise up to the rafters We champagne supernova'd the reactor But once upon a moment its glow had us enraptured
