"I need you" was all I said But she did not hear a word Something else was what she heard Was it something I said? What I meant was "I love you" "I just can't" was her reply Then the rain fell through her eyes While she stared at her shoes If I could get her to give me a clue If I could get her to give me a clue If I could get her to give me a clue To her mystery mind She might feel she could be better She might feel like she could just go on And stare straight at me with her serious eyes I said, "Please, I hate to pry" "Well then don't" she told my eyes Mumbling something about some child Born to troublesome times She has quite a handsome smile But it fades and she can look Like she's been riding on the back of a tiger Through a tunnel of fire I have heard that love is blind But I see her all too well How she keeps things to herself Like she's the scene of some crime Will I go down to my grave Never having known her touch Never managing so much As to hold her in vain?
